Scrap metal (steel, iron, and ferrous metal) is a valuable commodity. Metal recycling is a well established industry which really took off during WWII and has become an essential part of the global economy. Metal, a precious natural resource, is very energy intensive to produce from raw material.
Metal Recycling Process
Consolidated scrap metal is fed into massive shredders that rip the material into fine pieces known as frag. The frag product is shipped to steel mills where it is melted down and forged into new products like plate, beam or coil. These products are shipped to metal fabricators where they are made into finished products.
